Legal Island Annual Review of Employment Law 2016

02 Dec 2016

Eileen Wall

Employment law is always a tricky yet busy area for HR professionals and getting the chance to listen to a summary of the year’s changes was an opportunity not to be missed. Eileen Wall and Marguerite Brahim of Brightwater’s HR recruitment division were delighted to attend this week’s Legal Island - Annual Review of Employment Law 2016. The highly popular annual event examined current developments in employment law and HR. As always, the event proved to be thought-provoking and delegates left with a much stronger understanding of the HR sector in Ireland.

Throughout the day key developments in employment law such as objective justification in terms of retirement age, paternity leave, EU Data protection regulation and changes within the workplace relations commission were covered. Technical aspects such as the calculation of holiday pay and developments surrounding the organisation of working time act were also discussed.

Speakers on the day included Barrister Tiernan Lowey, Jennifer Cashman of Rowan Daly Jermyn, Sophie Rowan Coaching Psychologist at Pinpoint, Ger Connolly Partner at Mason Hayes and Curran, Michelle Ni Longaín Partner at ByrneWallace and Edwin O’Hora Owner & Principal at OHORA Consulting. The review also went into detail with regard to developing talent pipelines, compliance in recruitment and also had an interactive workshop for investigations and how HR departments can avoid problems and pitfalls. The purpose of the day was to provide delegates with a means to minimise the organisation’s risk of litigation, how recent cases in Ireland and Europe impact the workplace, HR planning for the year ahead, developing key policies for organisations, all important legislative and case law changes where outlined.

From a recruitment perspective the HR sector looks set to continue to be a hugely popular career field. Our HR recruitment desk has doubled in the last year and forecasts in the HR jobs market look very positive for 2017.
