About the Position

The CRO has a direct reporting line into the CEO on a day to day base with matrix reporting into the Group Risk Officer to.  With  primary responsibility to  the Board of Directors (the Board) and direct access to the Chairpersons of the Board and Board Risk Committee

The role has delegated responsibility from the Board Risk Committee to provide executive oversight of the risk management framework. The CRO shall attend the Board meetings as requested by the Board and shall serve as primary advisor to the Board and the Senior Management Team.


Key Responsibilities 

  • The continuous management and improvement of risk policies, frameworks and procedures that define the roles, responsibilities, controls, appetite limits and tolerances to effectively manage risks.
  • Provide independent assurance and challenge that the firm is being appropriately governed, identified, managed, measured, monitored and reported.
  • Monitor on the effectiveness of the control environment that ensures risks are managed within the risk appetite and tolerance limits set by the Board.
  • Exhibit a broad understanding of the business issues and risks and contribute to Corporate Strategy;
  • Provide independent oversight and proactively challenge in the planning and decision-making processes; and develop a strategy and a road map for enhancing the risk function ensuring full alignment with entity and Group risk appetite and with shareholder expectations.
  • Responsible for the sound and prudent management of the risk function;
  • Develop and maintain productive working relationships with all levels of management and other governance areas; and
  • Ensuring the risk function is resourced appropriately given the nature, scale and complexity of the risks faced by the business
  • Ensuring there is an effective risk management function and risk management system in operation;
  • Implementing and embedding the ERM framework, ensuring alignment with the Group ERM Framework;

Responsible for identifying and assessing emerging risks;

  • Responsible for monitoring and reporting qualitative and quantitative risks against agreed tolerance and limits;
  • Oversees and reports against compliance and Group risk policies;
  • Ensures effective processes and controls are in place and maintained to identify, manage, monitor and report on risks to which [the company] is or may be exposed;
  • Oversees and ensures compliance with the regular enterprise wide Risk and Control Self-Assessment (RCSA) process;
  • Responsible for the facilitation of the setting of the risk appetite by the Board;
  • Promotes a strong risk culture by defining the expected risk and control related behaviours; and
  • Ensures the continued operation of the 3 lines of defence

Experience/Requirements 

  • At least 10 years’ experience in risk discipline with 2-3 years’ experience in dealing with the  Executive / Board levels
  • Experience of past interaction, e.g. via presentations or regular attendance of meetings, with both CBI and Board (desirable)
  • Strategic thinking and execution with sound and decisive decision-making capabilities
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills (both written and verbal) at senior stakeholder levels
  • Ability to challenge ideas, decisions and the status quo in an effective and constructive manner
  • Demonstrable abilities in building, managing and maintaining a high-performance team
  • Ability to work well in teams and respond well to feedback
  • Strong academics –e.g degree and professional qualification in a risk, finance, actuarial or equivalent financial discipline
  • Strong knowledge of the operation of both economic and statutory risk management concepts and issues
  • Detailed knowledge of current and future Irish regulatory issues and requirements in both conduct of business and prudential arenas
  • Deep understanding of specifics of payment services industry risks
