Head of Underwriting Governance

About the Position

The Head of Underwriting Governance is responsible for the evolution and maintenance of the governance framework within Underwriting. They lead a team that coordinates all control and governance activities within the remit of the underwriting function. In addition they ensure that Underwriting processes and procedures adhere to all internal control and governance requirements as well as complying with legal and regulatory requirements. This is a key role which will report directly to the Chief Underwriting Officer.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate the further evolution of the Underwriting Control and Governance Framework. Promote a positive governance, risk and compliance culture and awareness through roll out of appropriate training to staff. Provide leadership to a technically experienced team.
  • Work closely with the Underwriting & Sales leadership teams to ensure that all underwriting governance requirements are adhered to. Provide day to day advice and direction to the Underwriting department on governance matters.
  • Ensure appropriate systems are in place to maintain a sound Underwriting Control and Governance Framework including Quality Assurance Processes, Risk and Control registers, Underwriting Guides and Licenses and Policy Documentation. Coordinate reviews in line with review cycle.
  • Design and monitor a control environment to ensure Underwriting processes and procedures are executed to legal and regulatory requirements. Carry out independent quality reviews on underwriting processes as required.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders such as second and third line stakeholders, external auditors and regulators. Provide department level updates to relevant stakeholders on risk, compliance and audit related matters.
  • Take a lead in designing and implementing solutions to evolving regulatory requirements; ensuring these projects are delivered within the defined scope and timeframe.
  • Carry out operational risk assessments as part of strategic initiatives.
  • Ensure any issues identified by Underwriting Quality Assurance activities or other reviews (e.g. second line, internal audit, regulatory etc.) are transformed into implementation plans supported by training.
  • Lead the development of the learning and development programme and facilitate training.

Experience/Requirements

  • An Insurance professional, possessing insurance business knowledge together with knowledge and interest in evolving risk, regulatory and corporate governance environment.
  • Good problem solving skills. Experienced in assimilating requirements, evaluating the business implications and implementing in a structured manner which reflects best practice and is engaged by the business. 
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • First class communications skills together with an approach that encourages a collaborative approach to achieving goals and outcomes.
  • Coaching & leading others.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities, working to deadlines and targets in a busy and demanding environment.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in an underwriting management or risk/control role. A relevant 3rd level qualification.

Remuneration Package

Permanent role, salary €85 - €90k plus benefits.
