  • The Design and Crafts Council Ireland (DCCI) is the national agency for designers and makers in Ireland. We currently have 66 member organisations and over 3,500 registered clients.

About the Position

**Brightwater Executive is retained exclusively for this Head of Commercial role**


  • The role sits in the Executive Leadership Team and reports directly to the CEO.


  • The Head of Commercial role suits a driven, organised, commercially focused person to lead the department. In this role they will be required to work with the CEO to identify, develop and pursue commercial opportunities to generate cashflow for the agency and thus increase the provision of support to Ireland’s design and craft sectors.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Direct annual Showcase Trade Fair - physical & Digital in partnership with DCCI subsidiary company to maximise the commercial opportunity for DCCI from the subsidiary, this could include multi annual fairs either physical or digital.


  • Lead a commercial programme that supports DCCI’s annual operating plan through generating revenue to be agreed each year as per budget signed off by DCCI Board.
  • Conduct a review of the strategy around the Council’s current Gallery and curatorial policies to ensure a comprehensive fit for purpose revenue generating approach is in place in line with the values of the Council.


  • Responsible with other members of the DCCI Executive to oversee the governance of the Council.
  • Execute the Strategic planning, budgeting and decision-making process for the commercial team and related programme.


  • Build and maintain key commercial relationships for the benefit of the council i.e. Design Ireland shops, ARI including the development of a franchise programme.


  • Establish strategic joint ventures to create more commercial opportunities for DCCI.


  • Ensure a pipeline of high-quality applications for EU funding to drive opportunities for supports for clients of the Council.


  • Monitor and deliver interim and key performance indicators for the commercial team.


  • Ensure that internal controls regarding Commercial revenue are in place and regularly monitored in line with the risk appetite of the Council.
  • Provide oversight to ensure the implementation of all health and safety across all areas of work within the team to ensure that all legal requirements are met.
  • Ensure adherence to the principles of equality, diversity, and inclusion across all aspects of the Commercial teams’ work


  • Maintain high staff motivation and output levels across the team, including active implementation of the Performance Development process.


  • Ensure that continuous learning and development is undertaken through the informal and formal learning and participation in the Performance Management and Development Review Process.


  • Contribute to the leadership and development of DCCI at a corporate level as a member of the executive team.


  • Cultivate good working relationships with other DCCI Executive members.


  • Monitor and deliver interim and key performance indicators for the commercial team.




Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • This role is responsible for Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) within DCCI. The Head of Commercial will be responsible for monitoring and delivering performance against KPIs including the following:


Revenue generated – as per annual budget


Number of Strategic Partners


Number of Exhibitions per annum


Amount of EU funding generated


Sales Target in Design Ireland shops


Revenue generated from Exhibitions




  • Recognised as a champion for DCCI’s vision, mission, and values.


  • Proven ability to implement cross-sector strategies with defined KPIs, with preferably minimum five years’ experience leading and growing a commercial department.


  • Proven track record of delivering on set annual commercial targets.


  • Proven ability to provide effective leadership and management to motivate and develop people to achieve high performance through providing constructive feedback and monitoring success.
  • Recognised ability to effectively lead and mange change to keep all internal and external stakeholder engaged and involved with the strategic implementation.
  • Excellent people manager, with skills in developing and motivating a team.


  • Appreciation of the value of creativity in the workplace to deliver goals.


  • Highly commercial and committed to the financial and operational realities of a national agency, where building resilient revenue pipeline is key to long term success.
  • Have an inquisitive mind and passion for excellence and innovation in the pursuit of business and cross-sectoral growth.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders to promote the goals of DCCI.


  • Knowledge and passion of Irish craft and design marketplace is preferred, however not required.


  • Knowledge of the Irish craft and design sector, including economic and business affairs, as well as political, social, and cultural matters.


  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.) is required.


  • Degree in business or other related degree.


  • Travel will be required on occasion across Ireland and international.


  • Full drivers’ licence.
