Operational Risk Lead

The ideal candidate will be commercially astute, with a passion for strong cross functional collaboration, forward thinking, with a strong delivery focus.

Reporting to the Enterprise Risk Lead and working closely with the CRO also, the successful candidate will provide a second line oversight role to the business units that are providing Protection, Group Risk, Savings & Retirement & Group Pensions solutions to customers. Ensuring that the operational control and governance framework in relation to Operational Risk is applied in a proactive and consistent and effective approach across all functions of the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Group Risk to ensure the Operational Risk Framework develops in line with best practice and is fit for purpose
  • The Operational Risk Lead will work closely with the CRO in reporting on the design and operational effectiveness of the ops risk framework for the Executive Risk and Board Risk Committees.
  • Shape the implementation and effective operation of the operational risk and conduct framework through setting of risk preferences, controls, and risk tolerances and KPIs, engaging with senior management as appropriate,
  • Lead the oversight and challenge of first line monitoring of limits and associated actions
  • Collaborate effectively with the broader business to implement and embed the Operational Risk Framework e.g., Risk and Control Self-Assessment (RCSA / risk register), Key Risk Indicators, risk incidents, operational losses, scenario analysis, etc.
  • Lead on delivery of risk assessments into the design effectiveness of the operational risk policy framework and business standards
  • Lead on the 2nd line input into the implementation of an effective Operational Resilience framework across the business
  • Provision of Quality Assurance reviews into the effectiveness of key risk controls within the Operational Risk & Conduct Methodology
  • Work closely with business unit SMEs to ensure our risk controls remain fit-for-purpose with respect to issues such as Business Continuity, Operational Resilience, Conduct, IT & Cyber Risks, Data Protection, Outsourcing Oversight, etc.
  • Maintain a strong and evolving outsourcing governance framework
  • Work with the 1st Line risk team to ensure issues identified are appropriately remediated
  • Contribute to the Operational Risk stress and scenario testing as part of the ORSA process


  • Primary degree and/or a professional qualification in a relevant technical discipline (e.g. actuarial, accountancy, audit, risk management)
  • Professional qualifications relevant to risk oversight for example risk, compliance or auditing qualifications
  • In depth experience of the industry, products, business model and associated risks. Ideally 10 years plus, coming from retail banking, insurance or wider financial services / or risk consulting.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging issues in the industry, enterprise risk management and regulatory environment relating to risk.
  • Current or previous experience in a financial services risk advisory function or an operational risk management function
  • Great understanding of statutory, legal and regulatory frameworks, risk management and corporate governance

Very solid knowledge and understanding of industry leading practices in terms of Operational Risk Management.

  • Ability to negotiate and influence effectively in tough situations, work in partnership to overcome obstacles.
