Senior Legal Counsel (Insurance)

Our client, a global specialist integrated travel insurance and medical assistance provider, with operations in 21 countries and who recently acquired an Irish based insurer is seeking to recruit a Senior Legal Counsel to its team. This is a new role created.

Legal Services Purposes and Duties

• Responsible for the delivery of high quality, timely and cost-effective legal services to meet the business’ strategic and operational needs • Coordinates the delivery of legal services to the businesses in the UK and Europe using external resources • Building collaborative and productive working relationships across the organisation and with key external stakeholders • Providing ‘solutions orientated’ commercial advices to the business • Ensures the legal function provides high quality legal advice that can be practically and commercially applied by the business • Maintains the process for centralised oversight of legal risks and activities in the UK and Europe • Drafts and negotiates all client and supplier contracts for the business units in the UK and Europe • Manages litigation matters for business units in the UK and Europe • Coordinates the legal and governance integration of the new Irish business into the wider group • Ensuring corporate governance obligations are met • Maintains the corporate governance frameworks in the business units in the UK and Europe • Coordinates the legal aspects of Brexit for the business units in the UK and Europe • Advises the business units on UK, EEA and non-EEA state regulations governing the sale and distribution of general insurance products. • In conjunction with Group Head of Risk and Compliance, act as the key regulatory liaison in the UK and Ireland • Manage responses to regulatory queries (which are rare) • Draft and negotiate client and external service provider contracts, deeds and term sheets

Corporate Governance Purpose and Duties

• Oversee the Company Secretariat services for the UK and Ireland • Appoint and manage external corporate secretarial providers (if necessary) • Ensuring that the UK and Irish companies within the group comply with their statutory obligations • Maintaining registers and ensuring requisite retention of corporate documents and records • Ensuring completion and lodgement of statutory forms/returns • Document preparation and distribution for UK and Ireland Board meetings

Key Skills / Qualifications

• Relevant tertiary qualifications in Law with a current practising certificate and up to date knowledge of EU insurance law is essential • Exceptional plain English contract and advice drafting skills • Background in insurance and/or travel assistance industries • Insurance claims experience not required or sought • Strategic and conceptual thinking supported by analytical and problem-solving skills • Proven record of achievement within a complex business environment with an ability to initiate and manage change • Highly developed interpersonal, people management skills with an ability to interact and influence at all levels • Demonstrated ability to negotiate pragmatic contract and legal outcomes • Highly developed negotiation skills • Management of multiple tasks and projects with conflicting priorities If you’re interested in this or other legal jobs, please contact Michael Minogue on 021 422 1000 or email mailto:m.minogue@brightwater.ie
