"The Future of Law" was the theme of this year's Society of Young Solicitors (SYS) conference took place in the Sheraton Hotel, Athlone where important issues such as diversity, technology and a new model of legal practice were discussed.

The conference was eligible for 3 legal general CPD points. Everyone congregated in the bar on the Friday night for a networking drinks reception. The workshop took place on Saturday at 12pm and as  always, the Gala Ball was on the Saturday night at 19.30.

The moderator for the 2018 SYS Conference was Patrick Dorgan, the incoming President of the Law Society of Ireland. The conference was Patrick’s first engagement as President so the committee was delighted to have him there to introduce the panel of speakers.

SYS was delighted to welcome Rachel Hussey, partner in Arthur Cox and committee member of the 30% Club. Rachel was recently honoured in the Financial Times and HERoes Champions of Women in Business 2018 List as one of the top 100 Female Executives. This is a fantastic recognition of Rachel’s work in championing women and gender parity in the workplace, and

Other speakers included Gillian McDonald from AL Goodbody, Gavin Sheridan from Viz Legal and barrister Francis Kirwan. The discussions were lively and certainly engaged the audience.

The SYS chosen charity on the weekend was The Jack & Jill Children's Foundation and there were some generous prizes available for the raffle during the gala ball. Congratulations also to Brightwater prize draw winner Kate McCreery who was the lucky winner of a €150 Brown Thomas voucher, a €100 voucher for the hotel spa and a bottle of champagne!

Thanks to Eimear Bell, Alex Kennedy and the rest of the SYS committee for organising such a great conference. We're already looking forward to next year.
