By 2020, millennials will form 50% of the workforce and some major debate is going on about the generational transformation that organisations need to undergo in order to attract and retain these individuals. There is a lot of talk about the stereotypical perks and benefits being offered to attract millennials, particularly with the big tech companies such as on site break out rooms, beanbag chairs, concierge services, yoga classes and subsidised canteens amongst others. We recently did a survey with a number of Irish engineers on the reasons for deciding not to come home to Ireland. With the changes in the economy and the media constantly telling us that we are out of recession, why is now not the ideal time to come back to the “auld sod”?
Our survey turned up some very interesting reasons, most being obvious, and some that varied between lifestyle and career. The possibility of “getting a job” wasn’t a barrier as people feel there are jobs here. However, are they the right jobs?
Ireland has a lot to offer people at the moment but here are the main areas of concern for Irish professionals abroad who are considering coming home.
Recruiters can be harsh critics, after all, our reputation with our clients depends on getting them the right candidate. But when it comes to interviewing people to work as recruiters alongside us, we can be the toughest of judges!
If you work in IT, you are aware the job market is in a very healthy place for most IT disciplines, whether you work in Software Engineering, anything Data related or Infrastructure. While there are many job opportunities, the market is still competitive and companies are discerning about who they bring into their teams, both in terms of technical capabilities and cultural fit.
In sales it’s important to be able to market yourself effectively to both potential employers and potential buyers. The way to do this is constantly evolving. In the past a good salesperson was only expected to generate revenue through traditional sales, this was typically over the phone or face to face. Social selling is becoming progressively more significant. We can now use social networks to leverage our contacts, this allowing us to build successful effective relationships, prospect leads and achieve sales targets through channels that weren’t previously possible.
Let’s face it – there are days when our jobs frustrate us so much that we want to go home at 11am but those days should be the exception rather than the rule. If you’re just working for a paycheck and not even liking any aspect of your job, then you should definitely think about a move. In order to excel in your career, your job should really engage and challenge you. So how do you start to love your job again?.
Temp jobs open up a world of opportunity. Every assignment exposes you to new people and new contacts. You never know where paths may cross further down the line and what temp role may lead to an employer referring you to another department/company that they know is recruiting.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock recently you’re bound to have noticed how much coverage Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies like Ripple have been receiving. It has brought the subject into the public consciousness from a position of relative obscurity. Most of the stories have gone something like this…”I bought €10 worth of Bitcoin 5 years ago by mistake and now I’m a millionaire!”…and, yes, for a lot of people who are actively involved in the marketplace it is a speculative attempt to make money.
Becoming a Qualified Accountant is a huge achievement and no doubt the result of a lot of study, determination and hard work. With the ACCA exam results released last Monday the 15th of January, many newly qualified professionals are wondering what next?
The landscapes of organisations have changed so much over the last 12 months. We have seen a huge amount of growth in marketing divisions. What was once seen as the fluffy side of the company has now become an integral part of a company’s overall strategy.
At some stage in their career, everyone experiences that dreaded “Sunday Evening Fear”, where you really don’t want to drag yourself into work on the Monday morning. It’s the time of year where we all tend to reflect and measure where we are at in terms of career satisfaction. It’s a natural thing as you look towards the following year. The question you should be asking yourself is, are you loving your job? Nothings perfect, but if you have serious concerns as an IT candidate on an aspect of your current role, the answer might be to make a change.
Commercial Director at Brightwater Mark Byrne discusses what winning Best in Practice Sales & Marketing at the NRF awards means to him.
Probably the most enjoyable thing about working in the recruitment industry is the number of people you interact with on a daily basis. It’s energising! As a recruiter you have the opportunity to speak with lots of people, to build lots of good relationships whilst enjoying some light banter, and all of this whilst doing your job. Daily networking certainly beats staring at a screen all day.
I attended the Cyber Threat Summit last week at the fantastic “Helix” on Dublin’s DCU campus. This event was a real eye opener. It kicked off with ICTTF president Paul C Dwyer. Paul is one of the world’s leading Cyber Security experts and he captured the audience with a very entertaining presentation giving an overview about how a small country like Ireland can play an integral part in the ongoing war with the “bad guys” in the IT world; hackers and criminals out to steal and disrupt. The ICTTF are a task force of professionals in cyber security that all have a common goal and believe you need a network to defeat a network. Then all of a sudden, an army of drummers banged their way down onto the stage. If people were not fully awake from Paul’s very entertaining presentation on how Bono could make the perfect CISO, this certainly shook things up. I have been to quite a few IT conferences over the years and have to say this was one of the best openings I have seen to date. Great job Paul.
At present, most working professionals will have heard of, or been exposed to GDPR in some form or another. At the very least, you may have heard those 4 letters flung around the office in slightly panicked tones. For those who still haven’t got to grips with it, an extremely simple outline of it is detailed below.

When you work in recruitment, you do get a lot of criticism. “Sure, how hard is it to send a CV over?” is one of the most popular (or unpopular depending on your viewpoint) comments. And in some respects, they’re right. Recruitment isn’t a hard job. But it is a tough one.
So, the day has arrived, you are now an ACA Chartered Accountant!!! It is an immense achievement! Proud pictures of ‘your dapper self’! Diploma in hand, trailed with bad dad jokes of ‘Be Audit You Can Be’. Your mother shedding a happy tear or two. After all why wouldn’t she, she has witnessed a mere 6- 8 years of hard work, late nights and lots of coffee!! The words ‘social life’ and ‘late nights’ will now all have new meanings to you. So where to now?
With cyber-attacks becoming more and more of a global threat and concern growing for businesses worldwide, the importance of cyber security cannot be underestimated. Nor can the ever increasing need for cyber security experts!

As recruiters, we sometimes get to hear very frank and honest (if somewhat misleading) views of jobs both from job seekers and employers. One of the pet hates of our Business Support team is when they get asked to recruit for a receptionist and are told to find someone who can answer phones and look presentable! A receptionist is SO much more than that! On the flip side, we also get lovely employers who ring up in a panic wondering how they’re going to replace their receptionist with just one person!
Thinking about returning to work for a previous employer? Been wooed back by the promise of promotion, career progression and the comfort of a familiar environment? You’re not alone. More people have taken this step than you think.
Sales is one job that everyone thinks they can do! But it’s definitely harder than it looks and needs a certain type of person regardless of their academic qualifications or self-conviction that they could sell sand to the Arabs.
So you beat some tough competition and have an exciting new job offer! Congratulations - now the hard part - handing in your notice...
On 25th May 2018 The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will replace the Data Protection Directive from 1995. The new measures contain many of the same principles and concepts as the current Data Protection Act. Which means that companies already successfully abiding by the 1995 legislation will probably be covered. However, the penalties for non-compliance are severe, and GDPR cannot be ignored.
Before starting my career in recruitment not all of these benefits were evident! The lack of knowledge around how recruitment consultancies work could mean that you’re completely missing out on exclusive opportunities, guidance around the interview process.
